Methodology
AI citation data comes from Ahrefs Brand Radar using the cited_domain_subdomains filter. This measures how many times each domain URL is cited as a source in AI-generated responses across four platforms: Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, and Gemini. Data is collected daily and sampled biweekly (every 14 days) for charting. This is citation data (the domain appearing as a linked source), not mere brand name mentions. A domain cited 10,000 times one week and 5,000 the next is genuinely losing AI citation visibility. Organic traffic comes from Ahrefs Site Explorer (monthly estimates, Apr 2025 – Mar 2026).

1. Google AI Mode and AI Overviews citations are massive and growing
Reddit leads with 8.3M AI Mode citations and 5.7M AI Overviews citations. Wikipedia has 9.2M AI Overviews citations. Britannica AI Mode surged from 1M to 1.8M (+81%). Mayo Clinic holds 1.75M AI Overviews and 1.6M AI Mode citations. These are enormous numbers proving Google AI heavily cites authoritative domains.
2. Forbes ChatGPT citations DOUBLED (239K to 494K)
Contrary to initial “mentions” data which showed a decline, Forbes actual citations surged from 239K to 494K (+107%). The Verge grew 31K to 37K (+20%). Britannica grew from 252K to 294K (+17%). Etsy grew 65K to 74K (+14%). Apple grew 116K to 153K (+32%). Most publishers are actually gaining ChatGPT citations.
3. Amazon ChatGPT citations collapsed 82% (93K to 17K)
Amazon was the biggest ChatGPT citation loser, dropping from 93K to 17K (-82%). Investopedia fell from 24K to 17K (-29%). Mayo Clinic declined from 101K to 93K (-8%). Meanwhile, most health and reference publishers remained stable in ChatGPT while seeing massive Google AI growth.
4. Organic traffic declining for publishers even as AI citations grow
Healthline organic dropped -48% despite holding 1.8M AI Overviews + 1.6M AI Mode citations. Forbes organic fell -45% while ChatGPT citations doubled. NerdWallet organic dropped -51%. This suggests AI citations may be replacing clicks, not driving them. Being cited in AI does not protect organic traffic.
